Description
If you’ve read about the European water buffet method and thought, “That’s the real thing — no blends, no fruit powders, just pure botanicals in water, and the horse picks” — this kit is for you.
Our founder Sara fell down this rabbit hole the old-fashioned way: reading European equine enrichment research on a hot Florida summer, watching her herd drink (or not), and wondering why American horse care had traded the traditional approach for buckets of sodium-loaded electrolyte powder. The Water Buffet Kit is that tradition in a box. No Flavors. No whole-food enhancements. Just the 11 human-grade, organically sourced single-ingredient herbs and spices at the heart of the method — plus everything you need to set the buffet up on day one.
What is the European water buffet method?
The water buffet method is a traditional European equine enrichment practice where horse owners infuse individual herbs and spices in separate buckets of water, alongside one bucket of plain water, and allow the horse to smell, taste, and self-select. Research on voluntary water intake in horses supports the observation that horses given palatable, novel water options will drink more — and that they tend to gravitate toward the botanicals their body responds to. It’s the original desire-based approach to equine hydration: no forced thirst from sodium, no guessing, no coaxing.
Who is the Water Buffet Kit for?
This kit is built for the purist — the horse owner who wants zero blended products, zero added whole foods, and full control over what goes into each bucket. It’s for owners drawn to the traditional European method in its original form: single botanicals, self-selection, and the horse’s nose as the final judge. If you prefer our blended Flavors line (Farmily formulas of herbs + whole foods), the Flavors line is here — but this kit is the herb-only original.
What’s in the kit?
- All 11 Apothecary single-ingredient herbs and spices: Turmeric, Beetroot Powder, Rosehip Powder, Nettle Leaf, Meadowsweet, Fenugreek, Organic Raspberry Leaf, Sea Salt, Garlic Powder, Cassia Cinnamon, and Licorice Root.
- 4 flatback buckets — enough to run a proper buffet alongside plain water.
- 2 stainless steel tea infusers — for clean, tea-style infusion of the herbs.
- Waterproof bucket tags — so you can label which is which and track what your horse actually drinks.
How do I set up a water buffet on day one?
Start simple. Set out 2–3 buckets alongside your horse’s plain water, each with a different herb infused (one tablespoon of herb per two gallons is a good starting point — tea infusers keep the herbs contained). Leave the buffet accessible for several hours. Track which buckets get drained. That’s your data. Over a week or two, you’ll see clear preferences emerge — and those preferences tell you what your horse’s body is responding to. Rotate, adjust, and build from there.
Is the Water Buffet Kit safe for metabolic horses?
Yes. Every ingredient is single-source, human-grade, and contains no added sugar, no copper, no fillers, and no mystery blends. The kit is safe for horses with insulin resistance (IR), Cushing’s disease (PPID), equine metabolic syndrome (EMS), and laminitis. Note: Meadowsweet contains natural salicylates and may affect competition swabs. Licorice Root is prohibited in some competition jurisdictions — check your discipline’s rules before use.
About salt and electrolytes in this kit
A note on our brand philosophy: our Flavors line (the blended Farmily hydration mixes) contains no added salt and no added electrolytes — by design. That’s what “desire-based hydration” means — we don’t force thirst with sodium loading inside a blend. The Water Buffet Kit is the Apothecary approach instead: each pouch is one pure ingredient. The Sea Salt pouch included in this kit is our clean, minimally-processed electrolyte source — natural sodium, chloride, and trace minerals. Salt and electrolytes have a legitimate place in a horse’s diet; we just think you should add them deliberately, at a dose you control, rather than have them hidden in everything. Use the Sea Salt bucket when it makes sense — heavy work, heat, hauling — and skip it when it doesn’t.
What’s NOT in it
- No blends, no pre-mixed flavors, no proprietary formulas
- No fruit powders, pumpkin, carrot, apple, or banana (those are in our Flavors line)
- No added sugar, no copper, no fillers, no gums, no “natural flavors”
- No forced sodium loading — salt is in its own pouch, dosed by you, on purpose
Who it’s safe for
Horses with insulin resistance (IR), Cushing’s disease (PPID), equine metabolic syndrome (EMS), and laminitis. Performance horses. Seniors. Easy keepers and hard keepers. With attention to the two noted herbs above, appropriate across every metabolic and life stage. Part of the Farmily philosophy — safe across species at appropriate doses.
How the Water Buffet Kit differs from our Flavors line
The Water Buffet Kit is the herb-only purist approach — traditional European method, single ingredients, full owner control over what goes into every bucket. The Flavors line is our flagship Farmily formulation: pre-blended herbs + whole foods (carrot, apple, pumpkin, banana, oat flour) designed for accessibility and broad appeal, with no added salt or electrolytes by design. Both follow desire-based hydration. Both are safe for the whole farm. They’re built for different kinds of owners — you can run both if you want.
Improve Equine is made in Land O’ Lakes, Florida. The Water Buffet Kit is our most traditional product — the one closest to the original European research that started this whole project.
Important: This kit contains health-supportive food-grade botanicals. It is not a medicine, is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and is not a substitute for veterinary care. Consult your veterinarian for horses on medication, pregnant mares, or horses with diagnosed conditions. Meadowsweet may affect competition swabs; Licorice Root is prohibited in some competition jurisdictions — verify your discipline’s rules.
