A new smell in the bucket is a reason for suspicion before it’s a reason for interest — and that’s not stubbornness, it’s a survival instinct doing exactly what it evolved to do. The Tasting Trough is built for that first conversation: three distinct aromatic directions, offered side by side, so your horse gets to tell you what they’re drawn to instead of you guessing.
What’s inside
- Nanner Beets (banana powder + beetroot powder) — sweet fruit over earthy root. The familiar-sweet entry point, and usually the easiest first yes.
- It’s So Very (cherry powder + apple powder + oat flour + anise powder) — bright orchard fruit with a warm, faintly licorice finish.
- Gourd Vibes Only (pumpkin powder + oat flour + fennel seed powder) — soft, savory-sweet squash with a gentle aromatic lift.
How to run a horse hydration sampler
Add one tablespoon per two gallons of water. Set the flavored buckets out side by side alongside a bucket of plain water, and let your horse choose.
Then read what you get. A fast yes is a horse who walks up and drinks — you have your flavor. A slow yes looks like investigation: sniffing, lipping, a taste and a step back, snorkeling, occasionally dumping the whole bucket out of sheer enthusiasm. That’s interest, not rejection, and it usually needs several more offers before it converts. A hard no is a flavor offered repeatedly and consistently ignored — which is real information, and worth knowing.
Most horses give you at least one slow yes. Plan on offering the same flavor more than once before you decide anything.
